Premier League Boxing Day Treat
The day of the year that will decide the fate of Premier League has arrived. The Boxing Day clashes will serve the perfect Christmas treat for every football fan. Every year, the team that survives to stay on the top in the Premier League goes on to clinch the title. Well, that appears to happen almost every time, however, there have been a few teams (we don’t want to take names here) that weren’t able to cash their luck.
The day after Christmas is known as Boxing Day and it is embedded in British Culture so delicately. Every Premier League side is subjected to play, and this is also the point of the interval in the league, so teams would love to end it on a high note before they head for a break. This year too, things are getting interesting as Matchdays progress. Keeping matches on Boxing Day not only brings in revenue delights for the broadcasters, but for people too since they are enjoying a holiday and there is nothing better than football to make their day more exciting. Also, winning on this day means that teams get a chance to start the New Year with a win.
Most Anticipated Clashes
Chelsea is likely to retain their top spot as the difference is impossible to be erased in just one Matchday, but nothing is certain in Premier League. Here are the top matches to look out for this Boxing Day:
Arsenal v West Brom
Arsenal, once again, is looking forgetful. They were unbeaten in 14 successive matches and suddenly lost two matches in quick succession. So, a win is desperately required at this point for Arsene Wenger, if he is hoping to keep the title hopes alive. For West Brom, even a draw will do wonders.
Leicester City v Everton
Leicester has proven to be the worst defenders of the crown so far as they are hanging at the tumbling 15th spot, managing to win only four times so far. Although they have been displaying outstanding talent in the Champions League and were the group leaders, their Premier League form is just so depressing. As for Everton, one can only say that they are the most unpredictable side of the season so far. Even after an impressive start to the season, they couldn’t hold on to it. A win against Arsenal at home and then losing to Liverpool in the last minute does not make sense in the same sentence. Well, we hope Ronald Koeman has a solution for it as Leicester can surprise big time as they showed against Man City recently.
Manchester United would like to carry on their impressive winning run as it is only the second time in the season so far that they have registered a three-match winning streak. Similarly, Man City could not afford to lose any more points if they want to keep the chase ticking. Same goes for Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal, as each one of them is contesting for a UEFA Champions League spot.
Sunderland has gathered along well as they are at the edge of the relegation zone and would love to escape that as soon as possible. But Crystal Palace and Leicester are narrowing the difference. Anyhow, every side is all buzzed up for the Matchday, and things are likely to get interesting.
The Suspension News
There is an element of bad omen for some teams since some of their key players will miss the Boxing Day due to suspension. Leicester City tops the chart as three of their key players are suspended including Fuchs, Vardy, and Robert Huth. Chelsea will also bear the concussions as Diego Costa, the leading goal scorer, and N’Golo Kante will be out for the clash against Middleborough on Monday. Sergio Aguero and Marko Arnautovic are also suspended, which means Man City and Stoke will be without their striking force. There are some other players who are on this list, but the suspensions will definitely ruin the festive program for the respective teams.
Boxing Day is always an emotional saga as the players are busy training, instead of celebrating Christmas, and that makes football more than just a sport. This and much more is ready to be served this Matchday, and the action kick off this Monday!
