Baseball is a somewhat new sport in the Olympics. Although it made its unofficial debut in the Olympics back in 1904, it wasn’t made official until the 1992 Summer Olympics. Since then, it continued until the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. However, it was dropped yet again in the 2012 and 2016 summer Olympics. But it is set to be revived yet again in the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games.

Although the sport is very popular in the US and other American countries, its lack of popularity in other countries is the reason why it doesn’t feature much in the Olympics. Over the years, the sport has been dominated by American countries. Meanwhile, European and Asian countries are usually very weak at this sport.

Its qualification standards have also faced heavy criticism in the past. Even though the sport is very popular in American countries, but only two teams were allowed to play the sport in the Olympics. Europe, whose baseball teams are substantially weaker are also allowed to enter two teams, which is why it is considered unfair by most of the fans.

The sport was added to the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics. You should take note though that the sport will not be returning in the 2024 Olympics.

You might be aware that the games were set to be played last year. However, the Tokyo Games were postponed due to the spread of the pandemic. Now that the situation has gotten much better, the games will happen as scheduled in July 2021. The Baseball event will start on July 28 and will continue until August 7.

A total of six teams shall be participating in the Baseball event. These teams include:

  •  Japan
  • Mexico
  • Dominican Republic
  • Israel
  • South Korea
  • The United States of America

These teams are part of two groups, with Japan, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic part of Group A, while Israel, South Korea, and the US a part of Group B.

Most of the matches will take place inside Yokohama Stadium in Tokyo. A match will also take place in Fukushima Azuma Baseball Stadium.

Over the years, the team that has won the greatest number of medals is Cuba. The Cubans have won a total of three Gold Medals and two Silver Models, pushing their tally to five. Meanwhile, the US has won one Gold Medal and two Bronze Medals, keeping their total tally of three Medals. Next is South Korea who won the most recent Olympic Gold Medal.
