There’s no question that Matthew Hayden made a powerful contribution to Australia’s batting line-up. In the first edition of the event in South Africa, hitting the most boundaries (32 fours and 10 sixes) and scoring 265 runs in six games.

Hayden played the ‘traditional Hayden’ in the second match of the competition. Walking down the track and going over the inner circle regardless of pace or spin, scoring an unbeaten 67 against the English team.

As Hayden attempted to reach the finals, he scored an impressive 62 off 47 deliveries, the second-highest total of his career. However, he was eventually bowled by Sreesanth, resulting in India winning the match.

2. Tillakaratne Dilshan – 2009

Dilshan was by far the best batter in the competition, receiving the Player of the Tournament title for his efforts in leading his side to victory.

Dilshan’s remarkable ability to find gaps daringly has been overshadowed in the arena of T20 cricket, which is becoming increasingly exciting with big shots and massive sixes, by his excellence in finding the boundary 50 times. Which are 18 more times than his second-most counterpart (Jacques Kallis).

Sri Lanka was riding high on confidence following an unbeaten group stage when they arrived in the semi-finals when Dilshan’s 96 off 57 balls gave them a chance to advance to the final against Pakistan after going undefeated through the group stages.

Jayawardena, a senior batsman who has been a member of Sri Lanka’s squad for nearly a decade, made an immediate impression in their first match after his arrival, blasting 81 off 51 balls against New Zealand. Despite his efforts, New Zealand won the game by two wickets, therefore his efforts were useless.

Against Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka’s opening batsman scored their first and only century of the T20 World Cup, 100 off 64 deliveries, which was also the tournament’s first and only century for Sri Lanka. Then, against the West Indies, he came within two runs of completing a hat-trick of fifty-plus scores, falling just two runs close of hitting another hundred.

Sri Lanka’s chances of reaching the competition final were crushed by a series of low scores in the tournament’s second half.

When India’s batting superstar Virat Kohli was at the top of his game during the 2014 edition of the competition, he was at his   best. The opponents had no response for Kohli, who proved to be a powerful player.

Kohli’s four half-centuries helped him to score 319 runs in just six matches. His runs were completed at an extraordinary rate, with an average of 106.33 runs per game and an incredible strike rate of 129.14 runs per game.

It is sad that Kohli was unable to contribute to India’s efforts to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the second time. Kohli scored 77 runs off 58 balls in the final versus Sri Lanka, an amazing score that stood out from the rest.

7. Babar Azam as the highest run scorer in T20 World Cup – 2021
