There are many events that fall under the gymnastics banner. These events have changed over time. The current events in which male athletes compete include:

  • All-around team
  • All-around individual
  • Floor exercise
  • Horizontal bar
  • Parallel bars
  • Pommel horse
  • Rings
  • Vault

Meanwhile, female athletes take part in the following gymnastics events:

  • All-around team
  • All-around individual
  • Balance beam
  • Floor exercise
  • Uneven bars
  • Vault

To date, the most successful team in the gymnastics category is the Soviet Union. Even though it no longer competes in the event, it has still racked up a total of 182 medals in these events which include 72 Gold Medals! Surprisingly, the Russian team is not too far behind. Standing in 11th, the Russian athletes have won a combined total of 44 medals in these events including 10 Gold Medals.

The United States is the second most successful nation in gymnastics, racking up a total of 114 medals including 37 Gold Medals. In the past, the event saw a huge rivalry play out in the Olympics Gymnastics back when the Cold War was at its peak.

Gymnastics in the upcoming Olympic Games will start on July 24 and will continue until August 8. The event was supposed to happen last year. However, the Olympic Games were postponed due to the pandemic. Thankfully, though, the situation is now much better and the games will be played this July.

A total of 324 athletes will take part in the gymnastic events, including 114 men and 210 women.
