Karate at the Olympics Games 2020

Who doesn’t enjoy watching a bit of chip and chop in the ring? Karate is widely popular, especially in eastern countries. It’s featured in popular movies, TV shows, and whatnot. It is so popular that even small kids know about karate and understand how people compete in it.

Sadly, though, karate wasn’t a part of the Olympics until now. In fact, the quest to add karate into the Olympic games began in the 1970s. Fifty(-one) years later, karate is finally set to debut in the 2020 Olympic Games happening in Tokyo this summer. The official announcement was made in 2009 when Karate received a 2/3rd vote and was confirmed as an Olympic sport by the International Olympic Committee.

Karate will be played in two different formats: Kumite and Kata. Under the Kumite format, two competitors face each other on an 8×8 meter mat. Each match competes for 3 minutes max. In the Kata format, the fighters are judged by a panel of seven judges. Those who get better rating progress through the competition while the others are eliminated.

There will be 80 qualifying spots for the karate event in the upcoming Olympics. Each nation can have no more than 8 athletes qualify for the sport in the next Olympic games.

The games start on August 5 and will end on August 7. The event was supposed to happen last year, but that didn’t happen because the competition was postponed due to the pandemic. Thankfully, though, we’ll see our favourite sports competitions play out this summer at the Tokyo Olympics.
