When the Pittsburgh Penguins selected Crosby with the first overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft, he was surrounded by a lot of hype. Crosby has more than lived up to that expectation. He is a player of an era and was widely regarded as the finest in the world throughout much of the 2010s. Wayne Gretzky, no less, declared in 2016 that Crosby “has consistently demonstrated that he is the best player playing right now. And it appears that the more significant the game, the greater impact he has on it.”

On May 31, 2007, Crosby, then just 19 years old, was chosen as the Penguins’ captain. He played in only 53 games in 2007–08 due to injuries, scoring just 72 points (24 goals, 48 assists). Despite losing to the Detroit Red Wings, he pushed the Penguins into the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1992.
