The first match of the 22nd FIFA World Cup is scheduled for November 20 between hosts Qatar and South American powerhouse Ecuador. On November 21, the Netherlands National Football Team will play Senegal. The Netherlands, often known as Oranje, has been placed in Group A together with Qatar, Senegal, and Ecuador. Netherlands is rated eighth in the world. The Netherlands squad has a history of being the most unpredictable team since the World Cup began in 1930.
In the 2010 and 2014 World Cup, they came in second and third, respectively. However, the team was unable to make it to the 2018 World Cup, which was held in Russia. Since Van Gaal took over as manager of the squad, the Dutch have gone undefeated in their past 15 international games. The Czech Republic was the last team the Oranje lost to in the Round of 16 of the Euro Cup in July 2021.
History of the Netherlands National Football Team
The name of the Netherlands National Football Team has changed several times during its long history. On December 8th, 1889, the Netherlands Football and Athletics Association (NVAB) were established. Pim Mulier, the country’s founding father, founded the Haarlemsche Football Club (HFC) when he was just 14 years old. After the athletes split off in 1895, the organization’s name was changed to Netherlands Football Association. A few decades later, there was another name change. To commemorate the Football Association’s 40th anniversary in 1929, Queen Wilhelmina conferred the ‘royal’ predicate on the organization. As a result, the Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) was established.
The introduction of professional football in the early 1950s was a defining moment in Dutch football history. During the postwar period, the Netherlands refused to authorize player salaries, leading to an outflow of Dutch talent to more lucrative leagues elsewhere. Players who choose to continue their careers beyond the border will no longer be eligible for the Dutch national team, according to the governing body.
But professionalism was gaining ground and couldn’t be stopped. Out of protest, a competing, unauthorized football association known as “wild” was formed. To join the new professional organization, ten clubs were transferred. The KNVB finally gave the two associations merged, and professional football was born on November 25, 1954.
Netherlands at the FIFA World Cup
The group has participated in eight World Cup competitions overall. In regular time, the side has never lost a World Cup game by more than one goal. The group made three appearances in the World Cup finals. The first occurred in 1974, followed by a second in 1978, and the final one in 2010. The squad placed third in Brazil’s 2014 World Cup. For the first time since 2002, the squad was unable to secure a spot in the 2018 World Cup.
Netherlands at UEFA European Championship
The squad qualified 10 times for the continental competition, including for the Euro 2020. Their first appearance at the competition was in 1976, and the European Championship of 1988 saw them win their only major championship. The Czech Republic beat the squad in the Euro 2020 round of 16 matches.
