In last year’s Formula 1, Lewis Hamilton won the race at the Brazil Grand Prix. However, Mercedes’ boss, Toto Wolff thinks that this year will be rough for Mercedes. He states that they could struggle more in Brazil than in Mexico.

The team and driver Lewis Hamilton are the defending race winners. They won at Interlagos in 2021 but failed to win any Grand Prix in 2022 with the problematic W13. In the previous race in Mexico, Mercedes displayed great pace throughout practice and the early stages of qualifying.

This year’s Mercedes W13 is poor relative to its eight previous leaders. An innovative and ambitious concept that the team never truly understood but stubbornly stuck to, and Lewis Hamilton and George Russell still don’t know which car will show up at which race, the bad one or the very terrible one.

Their shocking performance in Mexico was most likely their inconsistency caused by the high altitude. Which eventually surprised the former World Champions, whose strategy also went horribly wrong on race day.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff played down expectations. “On paper, it shouldn’t be quite as strong a circuit for us as Mexico, but regardless, we want to keep up our momentum from recent races. So, we will keep working hard to hopefully be in the mix once again.”

Toto Wolff aims to keep it going through 2023

Wolff was courteous when asked about the strategy errors that allowed Verstappen to cruise to his 14th victory of the season in Mexico. He mentioned. “We didn’t optimize every opportunity in Mexico, but we still managed to score good points with Lewis’s great drive to the podium and George’s P4 finish.”

“It was encouraging to be in the fight for the win, showing how far we’ve come since the start of the year. While we’re always aiming for the top spot, we should be proud of that progress and we’re aiming to keep it going through the end of the year and into 2023.”

As dominant as they were for the majority of the last ten years, their fall has been equally massive. The once-regular winners – 110 times since 2014 – have yet to win a Grand Prix this season, while Hamilton’s incredible record of a win each season since breaking onto the scene in 2007 is also set to end.
