The Arizona Coyotes have taken a surprising move by placing forward Alex Galchenyuk on unconditional waivers, leading to the termination of his contract. This decision comes just 12 days after signing him as a free agent, indicating an unexpected turn of events for the team.

According to an NHL source, Arizona Coyotes uncovered an undisclosed “off-ice situation” involving Alex Galchenyuk that had not been previously known to the organization. The NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) is currently reviewing the situation on Galchenyuk’s behalf. As he will now become an unrestricted free agent once again.

In an update from the Scottsdale Police Department, it was revealed that Galchenyuk was arrested on Sunday. He faced charges of private property hit and run, disorderly conduct, failure to obey, resisting arrest, and threatening or intimidating. The police clarified that the hit and run incident resulted in property damage only, without any reported injuries.

Galchenyuk, 29 years old, had recently signed a one-year contract worth $775,000 during the opening day of unrestricted free agency. Interestingly, this was not Galchenyuk’s first stint with the Coyotes, as he had previously played for them in the 2018-19 and 2021-22 seasons. The expectation was for him to compete for a roster spot in the NHL. Although, the team had the flexibility to assign him to the AHL due to his two-way contract.

At the time of the signing, Coyotes Manager Bill Armstrong expressed his satisfaction with welcoming Galchenyuk back to the organization. He emphasized on his versatility and hard work as assets that would contribute to the team’s depth.
