In a notable transfer move, Barcelona center-back Chadi Riad has made a permanent switch to La Liga side Real Betis. The Seville club paid €2.5 million for the talented defender. While Barcelona cleverly inserted a 50% sell-on clause to maintain a financial stake in his future.

Football insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed the details, revealing that Riad is already in Seville, gearing up for first-team training. The 6’2″ defender played a crucial role in Rafael Márquez’s Barça Atlètic side last season. He featured in 42 games across all competitions and netted 4 goals.

Now, at just 20 years old, Chadi Riad aims to secure a spot in Real Betis’ first-team setup for the upcoming season. The club’s qualification for the Europa League group stage, thanks to their impressive 6th place finish in La Liga, presents an exciting opportunity for the talented Moroccan.

Breaking into the first team at Barcelona was challenging, given the array of talent available to the club. The arrival of new signing Mikayil Faye from Senegal further complicated Riad’s path to regular first-team action at Barça Atlètic.

Nevertheless, Barcelona’s inclusion of a 50% sell-on clause speaks volumes about their belief in Riad’s potential and future growth. While the €2.5 million fee may seem modest, it provides a significant return for a player who had only made one senior appearance. A 2-1 victory against Osasuna last November.

Riad’s skill set makes him a valuable addition to Real Betis. As a left-footed central defender, he can adeptly play on either side of the defense. Having come through the RCD Mallorca Academy, Riad opted for Barcelona over Villareal in 2019. After a successful loan spell at Sabadell, he played a pivotal role in the Juvenil A side’s double triumph.

Known for his aerial prowess and ball-playing abilities, Riad showcased remarkable positional awareness and exceptional timing in tackling throughout the previous season. He is comfortable carrying the ball out from the back and boasts an advanced range of passing for his age.

While many expected Riad to join Xavi’s pre-season tour in the USA after his impressive season with Barça Atlètic, the management clearly saw his future flourishing elsewhere. With Real Betis, Riad begins an exciting new chapter, eager to showcase his immense potential on a bigger stage.
