Appointment of the new sporting director of Chelsea

Todd Boehly, a co-owner, chose Freund for the position after the team was unable to persuade Michael Edwards, a former player for Liverpool to accept.

Chelsea also discussed the position with Paul Mitchell and Luis Campos. Boehly, though, offered Freund the position, and he accepted after receiving approval from Red Bull Salzburg to discuss terms with Chelsea.

Freund renewed his long-term contract with Salzburg earlier this year, but they haven’t sought to keep him there because they know the chance to join Stamford Bridge is a big one.

Freund’s employment is expected to be confirmed by Chelsea early next week, but Chelsea is currently set to finalize arrangements with Salzburg and Freund.
