Additionally, his illustrious career included significant achievements with Lille, Chelsea, and the Belgian national team, where he notably led them to a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup.

“In life, it’s essential to recognize when it’s time to step back,” began his Instagram statement.
“After 16 years and more than 700 matches played, I’ve decided to bring my professional football career to a close. “I’ve had the privilege of living my dream, playing the beautiful game and experiencing joy on pitches all around the world. “Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work with exceptional managers, coaches, and teammates. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been a part of these incredible moments; I’ll miss you all.
“I also want to express my gratitude to the clubs I’ve had the honor of representing: LOSC, Chelsea, and Real Madrid. I’m thankful to the RBFA for my time with the Belgian national team. “Special thanks go out to my family, friends, advisors, and those who have stood by me through the highs and lows. “Lastly, a massive thank you to my devoted fans, who have supported me throughout my journey and cheered me on wherever I’ve played.
“Now is the time to cherish moments with my loved ones and explore new adventures. “I look forward to meeting you all off the pitch in the near future, my friends.”
