Kevin Magnussen Homecoming to Haas


Kevin Magnussen return to Haas F1 Team ahead of the 2022 FIA Formula 1 World Championship was the Dane’s first race back after a year away.

29-year-old, native of Roskilde, Denmark, and the son of former Formula 1 driver and sportscar racer Jan Magnussen Kevin Magnussen is described as “very talented and very determined” by the auto sports community.

Formula 1 Journey

Magnussen drove the McLaren MP4-27 Formula One car for the first time on track at the Abu Dhabi Young Driver test in 2012. He ran the fastest time of 1:42.651. Magnussen then switched to Renault for the 2016 season before signing with Haas in 2017 and racing with Romain Grosjean for the next 4 seasons. Magnussen retired from Formula1 1 at the conclusion of 2020. Kevin and teammate Romain Grosjean were both replaced by Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Haas’ contract with driver Nikita Mazepin was terminated. For the 2022 season, Magnussen returned to the team as his replacement on a multi-year agreement, pairing with incumbent driver Mick Schumacher.

Kevin Magnussen Comeback to Haas 2022

Magnussen rejoins the team with which he spent the most of his initial Formula 1 career, from 2017 until 2020.

He said: “I was obviously very surprised but equally very excited to receive the call from Haas’’. Also added: “I was looking in a different direction regarding my commitments for 2022 but the opportunity to return to compete in Formula 1, and with a team I know extremely well, was simply too appealing.”

When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Haas cancelled Nikita Mazepin’s contract. Kevin Magnussen has signed a multi-year deal with Haas, and will compete alongside Mick Schumacher in 2022.

Bahrain Grand Prix Pre-Testing 2022

After an extra hour of testing, Magnussen shocks by setting the fastest time. Haas was allowed special dispensation to complete one additional hour of track time after the chequered flag on Friday since the was not ready for the first morning of testing on Thursday due to a logistics issue beyond their control. 

Kevin posted the quickest time of the day in Bahrain Grand Prix Pre Testing. He threw in a 1:33.207 with just a few minutes left in his hour before the race ended. Three tenths faster than Sainz.
