NBA chairman joins Stephen Pagliuca ahead of final bid war for Chelsea takeover

Larry Tanenbaum, the chairman of the NBA, is one of the investors who has joined Stephen Pagliuca’s quest to buy Chelsea. He was at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday to witness Chelsea beat Southampton 6-0 before meeting with advisors and club administrators.

Pagliuca got assistance from John Burbank, the founder of the San Francisco hedge firm Passport Capital. And Eduardo Saverin, a co-founder of Facebook.

Tanenbaum chairs the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE) group. Which owns the Toronto Raptors, MLS side Toronto FC, and the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. He has a long history of sports property development, having owned and invested in stadiums for each of their teams.

Tanenbaum is likely to assist Pagliuca in his long-standing work to combat antisemitism. A cause that current Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has long backed financially.

Granovskaia wanted by all Chelsea bidders who fear she will go with Abramovich

Each of the four bidders for Chelsea has ‘indicated a desire’ to keep director Marina Granovskaia if they are successful in their bid.

Granovskaia has been a close friend of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich for 18 years. Serving as his advisor and overseeing the club’s day-to-day operations since her elevation in 2014.

The news that Abramovich will soon leave the club has certainly cast uncertainty on her future. But according to reports whoever wins the race to buy Chelsea would ask her to stay on.

Todd Boehly, the Ricketts family, Sir Martin Broughton and Stephen Pagliuca have all expressed a desire to keep Granovskaia around and the feeling is that she will be allowed to keep her current director role. As of yet, she has not committed to any group. And decision is expected to come after the winning bidder is chosen, when formal talks will be held.
