Satwiksairaj Rankireddy sets Guinness World Record

Indian badminton sensation Satwiksairaj Rankireddy has claimed the Guinness World Record for the fastest shot by a male player in the sport. With an incredible smash, the World No.3 ranked men’s doubles player achieved a staggering speed of 565 km/h. He surpassed the previous record of 493 km/h held for a decade. Tan Pearly, a Malaysian shuttler, currently holds the record for the fastest shot by a female badminton player, reaching an impressive speed of 438 km/h.

Rankireddy’s remarkable achievement took place at the Yonex factory gymnasium in Soka city, Japan. The 22-year-old, hailing from Amalapuram in Andhra Pradesh, showcased his exceptional skills to break the long-standing record. The attempt was conducted in a controlled environment on April 14, 2023. Official judges from the Guinness World Records verified the feat based on the measured speed.

Yonex, the Japanese sports equipment manufacturer, proudly announced the new Guinness World Records titles for both Rankireddy and Tan Pearly. Yonex recognized their exceptional performances in badminton. It is worth noting that Satwiksairaj Rankireddy ‘s record-breaking achievement marks the first time in over a decade that the previous record, set in May 2013, has been surpassed.

In addition to this remarkable feat, Rankireddy, along with his doubles partner Chirag Shetty, secured India’s first Super 1000 event victory by winning the Indonesia Open in June. They demonstrated their prowess by defeating the Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in straight sets. Scores: 21-17, 21-18 helped them to become the first doubles pair from India to clinch a Super 1000 title. This victory propelled them to their career-best ranking of No.3 in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings.

Continuing their impressive form, Rankireddy and Shetty are currently competing in the Korea Open. After a convincing win against Thailand’s Kittinupong Kedren and Supak Jomkoh in the Round of 32.
