The Carolina Panthers are taking a surprising turn as they halt negotiations for a long-term contract with star pass rusher Brian Burns. Reports from CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson suggest that the franchise tag is looming for Burns, with the Panthers officially ending contract talks before the onset of NFL free agency.

Brian Burns, at 25, is now open to discussions with other teams as he enters the crucial free agency period starting next Monday. Speculations abound, indicating a probable franchise tag for Burns, with the cost set at $24 million for linebackers this year. The decision deadline for teams to utilize the franchise tag falls on Tuesday.

Panthers’ General Manager Dan Morgan, speaking at the NFL combine, hinted at the franchise tag possibility, emphasizing the team’s appreciation for Burns. Morgan stated, “We would definitely use it if we had to use it,” while expressing admiration for Burns as a Panther and highlighting their close connection, having played with Burns’ brother.

If the Panthers opt for the franchise tag, negotiations for a long-term deal with Burns can continue until July 15. Notably, the Panthers have refrained from using the franchise tag since 2021.

Brian Burns, seeking a contract around $30 million last year, faces potential franchise tag implications this year. The Panthers had reportedly offered a five-year deal in the ballpark of $27 million annually during the previous negotiation.

In the 2021 season, Burns showcased his prowess with 50 tackles, eight sacks, and a forced fumble. Over his five-year career, the Florida State standout has amassed 151 tackles, 46 sacks, and eight forced fumbles, earning Pro Bowl honors in 2021 and 2022. As contract talks hit a snag, Burns now stands on the brink of exploring options in the open market.

Stay tuned as the Panthers navigate the upcoming franchise tag decision, impacting the future of this defensive powerhouse.
